Spider-Man: The Animated Series was my first introduction to the character, and to this day, it remains my favorite interpretation of Spider-Man. The show's mix of serialized storytelling, emotional stakes, and the complexity of Peter Parker’s double life left a lasting impression on me as a kid. The series didn’t talk down to its audience, it respected them unlike all of the other kids shows at the time. It captured everything I imagined Spider-Man to be heroic yet vulnerable, witty yet weighed down by responsibility. That version of Peter Parker, with his signature voice (Christopher Daniel Barnes) and the ‘90s animation style, is the one I hear and see in my mind when I think of Spider-Man. As I continue the VHS Series, it only feels right to include this. It’s not just nostalgia for me it’s the foundation of my fandom of Spider-man and Marvel.
I illustrated this version of Spider-Man using the Ink Bleed and Studio Pen brushes in Procreate to capture that gritty, hand-drawn feel reminiscent of classic animation. The background was created in Adobe Photoshop, where I carefully designed the buildings to resemble the iconic skyline from the 1990s animated series. I added a textured, bright yellow moon to echo the dramatic nighttime aesthetic that defined the show's atmosphere. For this project, I pushed myself further than ever before creatively. I created a short video and audio piece to test and showcase my editing skills, accompanied by a custom cover photo and a unique VHS/Spider-Man Devil’s Details and Designs logo. Every element from the visuals to the sound design was crafted with care to reflect the aesthetic and energy of the 90’s animated series while adding the VHS touch. This is the widest creative range I’ve ever poured into a single project, combining illustration, video and audio editing, graphic design, typography, and branding into one cohesive tribute to a version of Spider-Man that means a lot to me.
